I have a question about Pyramid. Is it a card game or a sport?

It seems to be commonly referred to as a card game the pilots play off duty, but I've also seen it used as the game that Kara played before she injured her knee and entered the Academy. I think Katee Sackhoff mentioned something about that in an interview, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, is there an answer to this? How was Pyramid used in TOS?

This is bothering me. Help. =P

Actually, Ron Moore explained this in the most recent podcast. In the original series Pyramid was the name of the card game and Triad was the name of the basketball/handball hybrid sport they played. Ron Moore mentioned that he misremembered and ended up reversing them so that in the new series Pyramid is a sport (Kara's backstory is purportedly that she was on a Pyramid scholarship and blew out her knee. It as afterwards she discovered flying) and although the card game is never mentioned by name it is TRiad by default.

Yeah, I seem to recall reading an interview -- though damn if I can find the link now, and I've been trying -- that corroborates this.

At any rate, when Helo asks if anyone checked out the Pyramid game on Gemenon, the context seems to be of a spectator sport. Not that you can't be a spectator at a card game, but . . . *shrugs*

Yeah, I remember Helo's comment and didn't quite understand it. Was he going off to play in some high stakes poker game? It makes sense now.

In the original series, Pyramid was the card game and Triad was the favored sport. (Two 2-man teams in speedos and bike helmets duke it out in a square-walled playing field to get a rubber ball and slam it into one of four goal-like holes (one in each wall) about 9 feet above the ground.)

Not exactly sure how it's used in this version. In the miniseries, during the card game, Helo asked if anyone saw the pick-up game of Pyramid on Gemenon. Triad hasn't even been mentioned and no one has identified the card game they play with a specific name, though with the pentagonal cards it has all the properties of the original's Pyramid.

So, not sure what's what in that regard. Someone ask Ron Moore?

Posted this before I saw the above two responses. Thanks for the info!

Not to nitpick, but the cards are hexagonal (6-sided), not pentagonal (5-sided). I'm sure you knew, though ;-)

Incidentally, the Cylon basestars in TOS were 5-segmented. FYI.
