Yes, late I know, but I had a lot of distractions during Friday night's viewing, so I needed to watch it again to collect my thoughts.
I think that just about everything that can be said about the Lee/Kara relationship dynamics already has been thoroughly handled in other analyses. But ouch, yes, still painful. Poor Lee. He has to get over the sense of inadequacy or it will kill him, literally. Maybe this triumph will put some of his doubts to rest.
I liked it that Starbuck was being a bitch to him. Not in the sense that I like seeing my boy mistreated, but it made her seem more human, and less the perfect sci-fi warrior.
The scene between Adama and Lee made me choke up both times I saw it. It may have been the bagpipes (they usually have that effect on me), but the fact that Lee didn't respond when Adama said his father was a better one that he ever was, was rather painful to watch, because you just knew it was true. Olmos and Bamber have the greatest chemistry and play off each other so well, I wish I could send the casting director a personal thank-you.
I could really feel for Starbuck being out of the action. Being a total control freak myself, there is just nothing worse than having to wait and watch while someone else implements your brilliant plan. :-) And in this case there were casualties. Oh Chuckles! We never knew ye!
Loved the beat-up viper, the flying, the dogfighting, and Dee's "the back door is open; godspeed Apollo." Squee.
But what got me the most was the Star Wars homage; like Luke's suicide run at the Death Star (that was it, wasn't it- brain not quite functional at 5 am), Apollo did pull off a crazy, "retina-detaching" maneuver that even Starbuck could appreciate. And perfectly in character, he was muttering to himself to keep it together, while you know that Kara in the same position would have been hootin' and hollerin'.
Oh, and Starbuck's mad grin as Lee gets out of the Viper. And Lee tossing the lighter back to Dad. I have a feeling that Adama may have more confidence in Lee's abilities from here on out. *hopes*
And I'm more and more afraid of Six. She reminds me of a Christian fundamentalist friend of mine who totally went off the deep end. Baltar is in for some even more crazy times.
Oh yeah. And Caprica!Boomer is SO pregnant!

Date: 2005-03-15 06:29 pm (UTC)I'm a control freak, too. It made watching Kara's torment all the more painful.

Date: 2005-03-15 08:54 pm (UTC)The sound of bagpipes is haunting to me too, so much so, they pulled me right out of the story and made me wonder about the sound design choice. It left me wondering if they have used similar music in the show before -- have they? I can't say exactly why, but it bothered me -- it was such a "real" exchange between father and son, that the music seemed almost to detract from it.
