this is a potentially stupid question, but I cannot seem to find out about this anywhere. correct me if I'm wrong, but the DVD set of the original '78 series does not actually include all the episodes, right? Didn't they put out a few episodes or a made-for-tv movie in either '80 or '84 covering the arrival on earth and the problems which then ensued? any more info about missing BG material would be appreciated.

You're thinking of Galactica: 1980, which was a separate sequel series rather than part of the original. It had a whole new cast for the most part, though I'm given to understand Starbuck made a cameo in one of its episodes. I never actually watched it. By all reports, it sucked hardcore!

(Also, hi to all. I've been lurking on the community, but this is my first comment here. ^_^)

They were rerunning Galactica: 1980 on the Sci Fi channel a while back. I did manage to catch the episode with the Starbuck cameo, but no, that seperate series isn't on the DVD collection of BSG.

As far as I know, most hardcore fans of the original hate Galactica: 1980 more than they hate the new series.

The confusion is understandable though, because later, they were running them ALL TOGETHER in syndication, all with the Battlestar Galactica name.

Also, Starbuck's appearance isn't a cameo - I mean, he's the whole focus of the episode. It's basically what happened to Starbuck. And from what I can tell, it's one of two episodes from that series/season that didn't completely blow every goat it could find.

So as a firsthand viewer of at least one of G:1980's episodes, what did you think?

I've seen all of the Galactica 80 episodes (as well as the original series). And the Galactica 80 season is just amazingly bad. New depths of bad television. The Starbuck episode is the only one that is watchable.

Yeah, that's about in line with what [livejournal.com profile] solarbird has told me!

*shudder* Sounds like, if I ever get a misguided yen to actually see some of those episodes, I'd better do it at 3am when all things are made funnier by sleep deprivation. :)

I'd recommend watching it with at least one other person, preferably someone sarcastic. It's great fun to mock G:80.

This is what I've got [livejournal.com profile] solarbird for! (She's way better at the MST3K treatment than I am. ;) )
