Been thinking on where they might be going with the whole Cylon fixation with Kara and this is what came to me. Cross-posted to my LJ

In the bible, after the death of Jesus and while the church is being formed under James and Peter, one of the greatest and most influential religious figures in all of Christianity comes not from within the ranks but from the other side.

His name was Saul and he was a Roman citizen and soldier. He had partaken in the persecution of many of the early followers. That all ended when on one day during his travels, he either saw a risen Jesus appear to him or in a heatstroke state had a delusion of such. The effects were much the same. After coming out of his blinded and frightened state and achieving a state of spiritual awakening, Saul threw off his Roman name and accepted Paul instead and become one of the greatest leaders the Church had. In fact, many believe that Paul shifted the focus that James had created which was of a small contained group that followed only the old laws and Paul went out and spread the word. To some he is to be credited for the rapid-fire spread of Christianity, even though he did it against the wishes of those like James. I suppose the part at the end may have little relevance.

Anyhow, moving along to Kara Thrace.

Clearly the Cylons are fixated on her. I don't wish to spoil but suffice it to say this obsession will continue. Leoben was almost reverent in a way to her and he became downright ecstatic when he realized who she was. He in fact knew much of her history and both of her names. Even Six despite her jealousy is showing interest. And her statement about joining in with Baltar- just sexual or more? Don't know if that's a stretch.

Also, while some of the Cylons have had opportunity to hurt Kara, none of them have killed her. Dating far back into history, many believed that a religious and spiritual conversion could be accomplished through torture and coercion.

Further we have the responsiveness of the Cylon Raider. Now personally I have to admit that I come down on the side of Starbuck being able to pilot it because she's an intuitive pilot but what if maybe the Cylon fixation flies all the way down to their so-called pets. Hmm. Not sure on that one.

Anyhow, here's my theory and tear it as you will. I believe that they Cylons perceive Kara as their somehow prophesied (I know we haven't seen it yet but it wouldn't shock me) Spiritual Leader. The human who goes out, like St. Paul, and speaks to and converts the masses. Kara's easily the most religious human character we have thus-far save perhaps the Priestess Elosha. Kara has passion and drive and even Leoben saw her religious face. What greater asset could the Cylons have beside a great warrior becoming one of theirs through a blinding spiritual conversion?

So, just a thought. And I know Moore said that there were legal reasons for having changed Paul to Saul but that I think somehow that just deepens it all for me.

Okay. Done now.

I was just noticing the religiousity of Kara when I watched last week's Flesh and Bone. In addition to being the most totemicaly inclined (the folded picture, the ring, the idols) character, she's seen praying twice.

I don't recall watching any of the other characters praying, with the exception of Baltar and then only when he's under coersion.

Even though you've got a society where priests oversee the swearing in of the presidents, and where they speak about religion a lot, you don't see other characters practicing religion in their private lives. The fact that they've chosen her, and certain spoiley stuff that I'm trying to half forget so I can see stuff fresher when it airs, leads me to agree that Kara as religious figure, or as person deeply influenced by religion are sure things as the Cylons develop.

And seriously, who talks about religion more than Cylons? They're worse than Jehovas Witnesses. But I have nothing but high hopes for the explorations of Cylon religion we've been promised for season 2. They've managed to make Politics interesting, and that's a hard thing to do w/ me. Cause I'm usually all about the porn potential.

Lucky for me, they have both. ;)
