Great critique! I think your essay captures the heart of Adama and Tigh. I feel so many people have this idea of stereotypical caricatures of soldiers...you are either a perfectly officer, noble and self sacrificing or you are an incompetent fool who deserves to be shown out the airlock.
The great thing about BSG is we actually see real people who have flaws. Adama is a great leader, but that personal touch which makes him such a good commander is also his weak spot, just as Tigh's single mind focus on being a good soldier makes him such a good XO in the heat of the battle but such a lousy diplomat. Unfortunately, it seems most people can't see past a 2D view of these rich characters.
