Since I couldn't figure out how to edit my last post (hey, it's late), I'll just post these here. Much more coherent than the previous bits, I promise. Spoilers for #3
Why exactly is Boxey with Starbuck? Granted, I don't exactly remember what happened with him in the mini-series, and yes the interaction was cute. I'm just not sure if I'm buying it/get the point. But I loved "Where's your mommy?" "She's dead." *snerk*
I thought the scene after Lee takes the President's side, when he and the Commander are walking together, was interesting. First in that this seems to be a common thing, and where most of their relating takes place. Secondly, with the identifying of Lee's roles. He's the president's advisor, and he's the CAG. But is he the son? That was left for not!Apollo to bring up later in the episode. I kept thinking Lee was waiting for Adama to acknowledge that relationship, but instead was told to pick a side.
I like that their making Kara out to be a highly trained officer and not just a thug. I do think they're going a little overboard on her abilities, though. *shrug* I thought the great thing about the original Starbuck and Apollo was that they were such a matched set, and nobody really knew who was the best. They were the best together.
I found Cally and Dualla's attitudes as hostages enlightening. They both knew what was going on, and were nervous but calm. Obviously they had had some training. Billy, on the other hand, is completely unprepared, and Dualla is the one reassuring him. And good for Cally for not provoking the guy, but then defending herself when pushed into a corner.
I come back to the name/role thing with Lee, when not!Apollo is going on about the call sign. Lee says it's just a stupid nickname--I wonder how he got it. And does it have something to do with daddy being a powerful man? (Again there's the contrast with the original. Apollo was the golden boy, with all the right connections, thus with the god name. Starbuck was from the wrong side of the tracks. Yet they were a pair.) And Lee seems to be determined to play both sides--hunter and healer, warrior and politician. Good luck to him, but somehow I don't think it's going to be that easy.
I did very much like Laura not giving in to the terrorist. When I watched that I thought, in many ways she's colder than the commander. Just in different situations.
Oh, and this has been squee'd about elsewhere, but I also love that Lee acted without hesitation to take out the threat to Cally. Boom boom dead dude, and then he was totally prepared to splatter not!Apollo's brains out. The gun shook, he was so pissed. But he used his brain even more than he used his muscles. (mmm, muscles)
Interesting that Boomer got called out about Tyrol. What's interesting is that Tigh's order was directly opposite of what the President wants (babies). I wonder when she'll start pushing that point.
A final thought. How much time has passed? The mini-series took one or two days, right? And 33 followed immediately after, with five days of no sleep plus another day tacked on at the end. I can't remember how much later Water took place, but it only had a span of one or two days at the most. And this episode follows immediately after, because they're getting the results from the ice. And the hostage situation only took a few hours, plus maybe a day for the cap scenes.
So we're talking maybe two weeks at the most? For seven hours of tv? That's pretty amazing. Are they going to keep to this pace, or are things going to stretch out a bit once the initial threat is past? One thing about the short timeline, it certainly keeps the tension ratcheted up.
