I absolutely love this episode, and rather than rambling away in comments, I thought I'd write up some of my thoughts.

Hi. I just joined this LJcomm and wanted to introduce myself. *waves* I haven't posted anything specific on my LJ on the new episodes yet, but I'm sure that as I watch the series more I will be inspired to do so. Right now, I'm just in shock because there is an sf series on TV that I find captivating again. I've been so lost without a good sf series in the past couple of years.

And I'm wondering this: Am I the only on this comm old enough to have seen the 1978-1979 Battlestar Galactica series when it first aired? (No, I don't have white hair yet if you are wondering. *giggles*)

I loved the show then, although I was only nine and ten years old so my tastes have grown far more sophisticated. I was a huge sf buff as a kid and I'm still one. The writing is much better in the current incarnation and the special effects are so vastly superior there's hardly room to compare. Back in the good 'ole days, they didn't have pc's on their desks to edit special effects. (Computers took up whole rooms back then.)

I'm also very impressed with the casting. Edward James Olmos rocks as Adama, imho. Lorne Greene was simply far too nice and cowpoke-ish to be a military commander. He seemed more like a kindly father-figure, but not a warrior. That's the improvement with Olmos.

And the Cylons! In the classic series, the cylons were walking tin cans. Now, I find myself actually a bit frightened by them, in so far as I can suspend my disbelief that they aren't "real."

Okay, this review is a lot more shallow (and less complimentary) than my last one. I spend more time picking it apart than anything, but I really don't hate it...

You Can't Go Home Again... well, actually you can if you bum a ride...

In case anyone hasn't yet seen it, the USA Network (American cable channel) is currently showing episode 2 of BSG "Water."

I don't know if they have some kind of arrangement or are in any way affiliated with Sci-Fi and its new parent company NBC, but this suggests that maybe episodes will be shown on this channel as well, which is good news for those who don't get Sci-Fi.

Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion by David Bassom will be released on June 24, 2005, in the UK and on July 31, 2005, in the USA.

Since I already have a serious Amazon.co.uk habit, I'll probably order it from there, and to hell with the exchange rate and shipping fees.

[ETA: In other book news, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Aircraft Carriers is very helpful when it comes to understanding how things work on the Galactica.]

Um. Since SciFi is reairing the first five eps Tuesday, I thought I'd write up a 'reasons people should watch' post. If it sounds decent to you guys, feel free to spread it around to anyone who might be the least bit interested. ;)

It's in my journal here.
